Senior Xavier Brown has been named the Gatorade Player of the Year.

Running back Xavier Brown, 12,  has been named the 2021 Kentucky Gatorade Player of the Year. Each state selects someone for this award, and Xavier joins last year’s recipient Frederick Douglass grad Jager Burton. In 2018, star University of Kentucky Football player Wandale Robinsons was selected for this award. Xavier had a historic season, racking up 1,445 yards and 21 touchdowns on 107 carries through 13 games. He also caught 16 passes for 385 yards and six touchdowns. Brown accomplished all of this while maintaining a 3.5 grade point average. Head football coach Doug Charles had high praise for Xavier’s efforts. He said that “Zey is so deserving of this prestigious award and it has been an honor to coach him the past 5 years.” Cheerleader Claire Ginter, 11, also thought that Xavier was highly qualified for this award. She commented, “He is one of the best players that I have watched, and I think he was a great selection.”

Next year, Xavier will be attending the University of Virginia to continue his academic and athletic career. He will be competing at the highest level in the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) for the Cavaliers. Xavier is also in the running for Mr. Football for the state of Kentucky.
