Professional Soccer Comes to Lexington

he United Soccer League announced the addition of an expansion team to Lexington. The team will begin its first season in 2023, and will play at a local collegiate field. USL president Jake Edwards said “This is an exciting moment for USL League One, the city of Lexington, and Central Ky.” With the leadership of Tower Hill Sports Owner Bill Shively, and Vince Gabbert, the club hopes to bring an exciting professional team to Central Kentucky that fans can rally behind. Club President Vince Gabbert is very excited about the new team. He explained, “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to bring a USL League One club to our great city and to our incredible fans. League One features an impressive lineup of community-driven soccer clubs, and we’re honored that Lexington will now join that group and become a part of the USL family.” Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton was very excited about this opportunity for growth in Lexington. Not only does it cater to soccer fans in the city that have been deprived of such, but it will create a community that people can rally around. The club is also bringing in new jobs, which she is very excited about. The club has stated that it is committed to doing this right. With that mission in mind, they are going to “conduct multiple focus groups, town hall sessions and workshops to gather ideas so that the club’s name, colors and marks reflect the energy, culture and diversity of the whole Lexington community.” LCA senior Zach Tackett said “It is a good addition, and is going to bring more money to our local economy.” Many other people share Zach’s point of view, and it is safe to say that 2023 is going to be an exciting year for Lexington soccer fans.
