Jared Butler helped lead Baylor to its first NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship.

The Baylor Bears have defeated Gonzaga in the 2021 National Championship 86-70, earning their first basketball championship in school history. Baylor was led by Jared Butler (22 points and 7 assists), Davion Mitchell (15 points and 5 assists) and MaCio Teague (19 points). The Bears overpowered Gonzaga for the entire game with a 9-0 start. Baylor became the first team to lead from start to finish in a title game since 2014. Many fans were expecting a high powered matchup for the entire game, but were disappointed when Baylor kept their foot on the gas all night. Baylor’s coach, Scott Drew, said this about the performance of his team, “Our guys, when the best is needed, the best is provided. The better he opponent, the better they play.” Baylor proved that to be true the night of the championship when dominating the undefeated Bulldogs team. Gonzaga finished their season with a 31-1 record and would have been the first team since 1976 to have finished the season with an undefeated record. Gonzaga coach, Mark Few, had this to say about the game, “It’s a really, really tough one to end a storybook season on, but listen, Baylor just beat us. They beat us in every facet of the game and deserve all the credit.” Baylor held Gonzaga to their lowest point margin of the season. This win for Baylor was sweet revenge after Gonzaga eliminated the Bears in the second round of the NCAA Tournament two years ago. The Bears will lose a few key players from this years team next year so the world will have to see if they can play at a similar level next year.
