Conor McGregor may have been the favorite, but Dustin Poirier came out on top.

On January 24, 2021, Conor McGregor would rematch Dustin Poirier in a mixed martial arts fight that was as heavily one-sided as the first time the two met in 2014. However, this fight took a different direction. Dustin Poirier defeated Conor McGregor in the main event of UFC 257 in a stunning second-round TKO or Total Knockout.  Mcgregor looked poised to win early on in the rematch, with both fighters seemingly evenly matched at some times. Still, McGregor landed a few more vicious shots. The second round is where things took a turn for the worst for McGregor. Poirier stuck to his game plan, withstood the early punishment, and took full advantage after injuring McGregor’s calf. He would continuously take advantage of Mcgregor’s legs as he has a wide stance making it easy for Poirier to get good kicks in there. Although one or two may not even faze McGregor taking multiple powerful kicks to the calf will cause it to weaken over time. This made McGregor protect his legs which would in-turn leave other parts of his body exposed making it easier for Poirier to land hard-hitting blows to the chest and head.

The reward for Poirier’s win is a title shot, either against Nurmagomedov, Chandler, or Oliveira. After waiting nearly seven years for the opportunity, Poirier finally writes redemption into his story. Redemption in the sweetest way possible in the MMA scene, a TKO. When I asked Matthew Donnelly, 12,  what he thought of the fight he said, “I really wish McGregor would have won but it was pretty clear who was better by the second round.” Logan Martin, 12, said, “I wish he would have played more aggressive in the second round as to not let Dustin get the advantage.” While several students enjoyed the fight, not everyone paid attention. For this reason, science teacher Mr. Cross did not really have an opinion on the matter. ” I don’t really watch MMA so I am not sure”. Hopefully, Mr. Cross will be more helpful next time. In conclusion, however, Dustin Poirier has taken down the biggest name in MMA.
