Quarantine Birthdays

Quarantine Birthdays

Birthdays have been a little different this year, all thanks to COVID-19. Everyone, but particularly the younger generation has been tasked with thinking of new ways to make birthdays special when physical contact is a no no. It’s not an easy situation to be in, as Matthew Maggard, 10, states, “You gotta be creative to think of something fun to do for a birthday during quarantine. I’d hate to have a birthday during this time, I feel bad for everyone that has one. You just gotta do what you can.” It certainly is unfair to those who do have a birthday during quarantine, but it’s just another obstacle for all of us to jump over.

As for those creative ideas? Well, they are certainly not lacking. You make look outside and see a long train of cars yelling, screaming, waving and honking; yup that’s a parade, something we’ve all become somewhat accustomed to during quarantine. But parades aren’t the only way, people have made zoom conferences for friends to join and wish a happy birthday, and those with video editing skills have made videos with clips of loved ones wishing a happy birthday. Anthony Johns, 10, said, “It’s really cool to see the different ideas people come up with. You need to celebrate somehow, so they’re doing that.” The celebrations must go on, and no social distancing rule will stop them. Cole Ginter, 10, says, “You gotta do what you gotta do. Something to have fun.” That’s certainly what quarantine has come to.
