Golden Globes Start Hollywood Awards Season

Joe Shlabotnik,

The 77th annual Golden Globes kicked off the Hollywood awards season on Sunday January 5. The event was hosted by comedian Ricky Gervais, who stirred up his own controversy with his jokes that poked fun at those in the entertainment industry.  His monologue was full of cussing and calling out many of the actors. This speech made many actors laugh, but other actors looked to be uncomfortable or offended by what he was saying. But the mean glares he got did not stop him, as he went on to finish the whole speech.

As to those who hoped to receive a Golden Globe, it was a big night for Netflix. It set a record with the most nominations at 34. The streaming service also had three of the five nominees for Best Motion Picture in drama. Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story,” received the most nominations of any film this year was on Netflix. Netflix and HBO shared most of the nominations for TV shows. Many were surprised that HBO’s “Game of Thrones” only received one nomination. Kit Harington was nominated for his portrayal of Jon Snow. HBO’s miniseries “Chernobyl” received four nominations.

Many winners of the Golden Globes go up on stage and give a speech about how grateful they are, thanking the fans, God, and their coworkers for all the hard work. However, others used their time on stage to discuss political issues. For example, some went up on stage and talked about climate change and how their thoughts were going out to Australia, where people are dealing with devastating fires.  The Golden Globes all in all was full of surprises and mixed emotion, causing it to be one of the more memorable Golden Globes awards shows.
