Many students and Americans were surprised with the news earlier this week that President Donald Trump authorized a drone strike in Iraq that killed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani. This caused many problems, including Iran’s promise of retaliation. With concerns about more violence in the Middle East, there is talk of whether this strike could be the start of a World War III. Many people from all over the world are frightened and on the edge of their seats waiting to see what Iran will do next.

On Wednesday January 8, President Trump spoke to the American people about some of the reasons for the attack. In May 2019, Iran attacked an oil tanker in the Persian Gulf. In July, Iran seized British oil tankers. In September, Iran attacked Saudi’s state run oil company. In December, Iranians stormed the United States embassy in Baghdad. Finally, to start the year 2020 President Trump found it justified to kill the person behind it all, Qasem Soleimani. In response, Iran fired missiles into a military base in Iraq where U.S. soldiers were housed. Luckily, no Americans were killed.

The concerns about another world war come from Iran’s allies. Iran has close allies are China and Russia. They are the countries America is watching closely at the moment. Students are taking notice. Mia Bond, 10 said “I’m not convinced Iran would try to attack America but their allies might try to do something.” Iran has already made a counter attack but not directly at an American base. As many people are scared out of their minds other students are less concerned. “This whole Iran thing is just a meme,” remarks Jacob, 10. Steven Rodes, 10 mentioned “I’m scared, yes, but I’m not too worried for the moment, but i’m not getting my hopes up yet”.
