In a Christian worldview, the term fasting should not be anything surprising. Fasting is the act of abstaining from something, usually for religious purposes. Yet, many ask what the point of fasting is. Fasting for religious purposes is when an individual abstains from whatever desire they choose so they can focus more on Christ. For example, many Christians fast for Lent. The purpose is to take an aspect out of an individual’s life to focus more on their relationship with Christ. Many ask what you can fast from. Essentially, one can fast from almost anything. You can fast from social media, food, alcohol, tv, working out, to name just a few.

While fasting may seem difficult, it has many benefits. Those who fast do so not only to support whatever it is they believe in, but they also fast for a cause greater than themselves. Fasting allows the individual who participates in it to become more aware of the cause they are fasting in, which in a Christian aspect allows the individual to focus more on Christ. However, fasting has become less popular in our society today. This is because the society we live in today in non-religious, and Christian values do not determine what one does in society today. Nonetheless, Christians today have even more reason to implement fasting into their lifestyle. Thus, living in a non-religious society makes it harder for Christians focus on Christ, yet with fasting it allows Christians to take time to focus on God and strengthen their relationship with him.

Recently, I fasted from social media. While this may seem like no big deal, the average teen today spends about eight hours a day online. While taking a break from social media, I had lots of time to strengthen my relationship with Christ and find ways in which he wants to work through me. Not only did the this fast allow me to grow through Christ, but also allowed other to see how Christ grew threw me. In fact, my fast allowed three others to implement fasting into their lifestyle. By making efforts to put fasting into my lifestyle, it has changed my walk with Christ completely. Fasting allows one to focus on less on worldly values and more on spiritual values, spend more time with God, and changes one’s outlook on life. I highly suggest fasting, it has several benefits on one’s connection with Christ, and changes one’s perspective on Christ.
