Mid-term elections 2018 concluded this past Tuesday, November 6. Many families, teachers, and even influencers on social media encouraged citizens to show up to the polls. Many of those encouraged to participate were first time voters. The LCA Class of 2019 contained a few participants and witnessed the win of Congressman Andy Barr.

A few seniors shared their first suffrage experience.

Gabe Smith, 12, arrived at the polls along with his father at the early hour of 5:30 AM. He arrived this early due to college visits scheduled during the day.  Many people were already there the same time as Gabe despite the early time. He explained how he did not do a ton of research prior, and was not entirely sure who to vote for, though his parents had some influence in his decisions.  Overall, he described it as a positive experience. “I got a nice sticker.”

Rosemary Cruse, 12, who turned 18 just in time for the election, described her experience.  “It was so cool to finally have an impact in state government. Voting is such an important right and everyone should exercise theirs. I’m blessed to live in a country where I have the ability to promote my political beliefs.”

Samuel Martin, 12, a well-informed senior who participated in the election, expressed his take on his first voting experience. He was given the opportunity to campaign for the Congressman Barr, and even talked to central Kentucky residents up to the Monday before the election. For several months, he has been making calls and trying to convince people to vote for Andy Barr. “It was really cool to be able to vote in my first election, especially after knocking on doors and making phone calls for the last few months.”

Although the race for Congress was a very close one, Barr defeated McGrath, and remains Congressman.
